چکیده

This paper deals with optical packet switches with limited buffer capabilities, subject to asynchronous, variable-length packets and connection-oriented operation. The focus is put on buffer scheduling policies and queuing performance evaluation. In particular a combined use of the wavelength and time domain is exploited in order to obtain contention resolution algorithms that guarantee the sequence preservation of packets belonging to the same connection. Four simple algorithms for strict and loose packet sequence preservation are proposed. Their performance is studied and compared with previously proposed algorithms. Simulation results suggest that by accepting some additional processing effort it is possible to guarantee very low packet loss probabilities while avoiding the out-of-sequence delivery. c © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Design of Arrayed Waveguide Grating based Optical Switch for High Speed Optical Networks

This paper demonstrates the design of an Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWG) based optical switch. In the design both physical and network layer analysis is performed. The physical layer power and noise analysis is done to obtain Bit Error Rate (BER). This has been found that at the higher bit rates, BER is not affected with number of buffer modules. Network layer analysis is done to obtain perfor...

An optical data rate conversion method for high-speed packed-switched photonic networks

Optical packet compression/expansion allows an ultra-fast media access in packet-switched optical networks. A novel optical packet rate-conversion scheme enabling simultaneous compression/expansion and serial-to-parallel conversion of large optical packets is proposed and investigated. Thereby the rate-conversion time is reduced.

IP Forwarding Alternatives in Cell Switched Optical Networks

Optical switching will enable core Internet packet switching to scale with future transmission rate increases. Currently proposed optical ATM switches do not allow packet reassembly, which is necessary for packet level forwarding. This results in the requirement to create end to end ATM virtual connections for flows even if they contain only one packet. In electronically switched networks MPOA ...
